Assistant Attorney General – Division of Child Support Enforcement

Position Type: Full-Time
Hiring Range: Commensurate with Experience

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a qualified attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General representing the Division of Child Support Enforcement (DCSE) of the Virginia Department of Social Services.

Position Overview

This role involves representing DCSE in its mission to establish paternity and determine, modify, and enforce child support obligations. The selected candidate will handle litigation in state and federal courts while providing legal counsel, training, and program guidance to the Division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Litigate child support enforcement cases in state and federal courts

  • Provide legal advice, training, and support to DCSE staff

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with courts and stakeholders

  • Manage a high-volume caseload effectively and independently

  • Supervise legal administrative assistants as assigned

  • Participate in committees, workgroups, and special projects

  • Prepare and deliver training and informational programs

  • Attend conferences, seminars, and continuing legal education

This position serves courts in: Albemarle, Buena Vista, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange, and Waynesboro.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Admission to the Virginia State Bar

  • Strong litigation, research, writing, and organizational skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities

  • Ability to manage time effectively and work both independently and collaboratively

  • Capacity to handle a large caseload and competing priorities

  • Willingness to travel as required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience representing a governmental entity
